Whippoorwill 02:42
Whippoorwill, you’re not singing anymore you’re just crying at my window big old wind, you don’t move me anymore you’re just screaming with no sound you’re good & smart & nice & kind it’s just your way everyone who knows you dear would say the same shining star, I can’t feel you anymore your light won’t reach to me apple blossom, go back inside it isn’t time for spring my sweet friend, I’m toiling beside you now we wade through days and wait for change to come around oh bird, oh wind, oh star, oh appletree if you’re sad, if you’re glad I don’t mind it you’re morning bells to me

If I’m feeling well enough I won’t mind it so much if the head of the mop falls off when I’m closing down the shop brush her hair back warm, brown strands soaked soft in vinegar and orange thunder in my hands if I’m feeling well at all when I rinse the breadboard off I’ll pretend that it’s a baby in the sink still too small to use the tub so tender, I am washing criss-cross marks smelling of onion skins with the yellow dawn, I’ll make her new again the only way I have found to make it through is to take so much care with everything I do so gently, I am working yes, I fill the salt, and I wring the rags, and I do it well all the work I have

Our first apartment in the summer of fear and grief I hesitate in the doorway to count the casualties our first apartment with the helicopter sounds and the neighbors banging pots & pans in case the enemy is around all the while right outside my garden knows to grow pulling weeds, fever dreams pretend I have control our first apartment all the furniture came free off the street stores closed down, or else burned out make it do or do without it’s not stealing to take what’s owed take all that shit, the debt’s still whole our first apartment I planted a brown eyed sue one blossom for every sorrow, the whole street went up in bloom

Strangers 03:21
This morning my mom called to tell me she’d stopped at a redlight and seen my dad in his car so she rolled down her window to say: hey, how are you? it’s been a long time since i’ve seen you around he told her that I called him earlier that morning to ask for advice on how to buy a new-used car I’d been rejected by the loan officer because I don’t have a very good credit score my dad said darling, I will sign for you put my name on the line for you I want you always to be able to get yourself home my dad taught me to be skeptical of everything I never have seen him wearing a tie he grew up racing sailboats on lake michigan there’s nothing that he can’t do if he tries how are you? I’d asked my dad that morning he said: I don’t feel like answering that question anymore, I’m fine though I think that we live in an experiment going horribly right just like they planned at the start two people in cars stopped at a redlight who once were married, whose daughter I am parallel lines, just briefly pausing just waiting until they go their own ways again while they’re waiting, talking about me their only daughter, grown up and gone I wish I could have seen this moment unfolding two strangers, my parents, waiting for the green light to move them along

Prairie flower wildfire leaves are changing by the hour Sumac is red, fields are gold corn is bending, growing old storm is rolling pressure holding island forest, ghost white birch just a look to quench my thirst shooting stars have all took flight purple blossom dying light shadows long at each days end dusk is early easing in prairie flower wildfire leaves are changing by the hour Sumac is red, fields are gold corn is bending growing old

Mountain 02:42
Mountain, you’re my childhood bedroom you look the same as the day that I left you same town twenty times over to leave it now is like leaving a lover as for you easy come easy go if you die on the way I’ve been good to know no feeling now but the burn of the ride up the mountain down the otherside I copied your motions when I was growing do we mimic each other? are my movements my own? mountain heather is white and red the avalanche willows are bending their heads the lakes they are filled with the softening ice the berries aren’t ready, next month they’ll be ripe
7.
Thinking of you walking, and me watching you are patient, moving slowly helping everybody, solving problems never too much, wild circus once my walking teacher, I could hold on now you hold me, quiet safety hello, hello, hello I’m here, I’m here, I’m here shifting of the still limbs they sleep sweetly constant asking for their answer hello, hello, hello I’m here, I’m here, I’m here

End Days 03:15
What's it like to be a girl trying to make it in the end days? feels like I’m standing on nothing I’ve got no guarantees it’s hard to make the big move, baby when the world is on her knees I don’t know where to go if it’s not burning then it’s freezing and we’re living in the end days I wake up and everything’s the same getting nervous ‘cause it’s so mundane just another of those end days feels good feels fine to be home in the end days maybe I want to be close to my family when the quake finally makes us shake I dreamed we were making a painting we were riding in the back of a car taped a sheet to the window traced the shapes of the trees & the houses & the farms and we’re living in the end days like we’re waiting for the next phase no more surprises, it’s a dull knife blade just another of those end days I dreamed we were making a painting we were riding in the back of a car taped a sheet to the window traced the shape of the trees & the houses & the farms

Regulus Lane 06:01
My parents met at an AA meeting everything after that is history repeating like it always does when you fall in love windy fall night 1994 I was born on a futon on the floor I came right on time, right on time in the cabin on regulus lane hauling water and propane tanks in the truck I called Big Yellow High, we raced horses down I-5 and we crossed the finish line first everytime crossed the finish line first every time there was magic there and it came at a cost the game was quick to change the moment I got lost trees grew in on all sides they were fickle friends, no loyalty in the wild and I’m calling out crying, half-way up a tree and trying to escape a pack of dogs that I heard but never saw everything after that is history repeating
