This morning my mom called to tell me she’d stopped
at a redlight and seen my dad in his car
so she rolled down her window to say: hey, how are you?
it’s been a long time since i’ve seen you around

he told her that I called him earlier that morning
to ask for advice on how to buy a new-used car
I’d been rejected by the loan officer
because I don’t have a very good credit score

my dad said darling, I will sign for you
put my name on the line for you
I want you always to be able to get yourself home

my dad taught me to be skeptical of everything
I never have seen him wearing a tie
he grew up racing sailboats on lake michigan
there’s nothing that he can’t do if he tries

how are you? I’d asked my dad that morning
he said: I don’t feel like answering that question anymore,
I’m fine though I think that we live in an experiment
going horribly right just like they planned at the start

two people in cars stopped at a redlight
who once were married, whose daughter I am
parallel lines, just briefly pausing
just waiting until they go their own ways again

while they’re waiting, talking about me
their only daughter, grown up and gone
I wish I could have seen this moment unfolding
two strangers, my parents, waiting for the green light to move them along
